Stoneboat Tower
Pictured above is a thing I made over the last year or so. It's an attempt to use stone and wood as they are best used, the use to which each material is best suited. So the stone, which is limestone from Ontario, is carefully fitted together in traditional configurations. The wood, which is red cedar from BC, is worked to represent how timber is used for structure and strength. The stone sits with weight and makes a stable base. The wood reaches up and out with triangulation for rigidity. The sails are steam bent pine and paper shrunk tight with water, as in building an old style airplane model. It's there to contrast the lightness of the sails with the strength and stability of the stone and wood. I didn't plan this thing. Just started building from the bottom up and kept adding, (and sometimes subtracting) until it seemed done. There are small LED lights built in which makes for a dramatic sight in the dark. Ontario Stone Cottage
I started this architectural model about 5 years ago, as an experiment to see if I could make a realistic looking model of a stone cottage from Ontario of about 1850, using actual limestone and wood. Still haven't completed the interior. It's almost time to start renovations. More Details are here
